30 Seconds to Powerful Positive Thinking

Stressful thoughts happen all the time.

You can be having a great day, and all of a sudden you find yourself listening to the radio or chatting with a friend and you notice a stressful thought:

“I’m afraid I’ll get sick because I’ve been exposed to the flu.”

“What if the hurricane comes here and we can’t leave?”

“It would be awful if the sand washes away and we can never go to the beach.”

“What will happen if I get laid off?”

Thoughts like these are quite normal, but when we repeat them over in our minds they can cause tremendous amounts of overwhelming stress. Until now, you might have thought that you can’t do anything about them. You might even feel that you are doomed to repeat these negative thoughts.

When you have thoughts about the things you have no control over, it’s easy to change them  into positive or neutral thoughts when you know how.

Here is an easy and effective way to change your thinking from stressful to positive.

How To Stay Calm and Reduce Stress

STEP 1:

    1. Think about some of your recurring negative thoughts. This would be a thought about something you have no control over, such as the stock market tanking, severe weather, or global warming. It might even be a worry about someone saying or doing something that is out of your control.

STEP 2:

    1. Write that negative thought on a piece of paper.
    2. Then, think of what the opposite of that thought might be. This will be a thought that will make you feel better and calmer – a thought that has the possibility of being true.
    3. Write your new calm thought next to your fear thought.

EXAMPLES:

Fear Thought:                        ”I’m afraid I’ll get sick because I’ve been exposed to the flu.”
Calm Thought:      “I like the idea that I am healthy and feel great.”

Fear Thought:                        ”What if the hurricane comes and we lose power?”
Calm Thought:      “I like the idea that we are safe and sound.”

Fear Thought:                        ”What will happen if I get laid off?”
Calm Thought:       “I like the idea that everything works out.”

STEP 3:

Every time you notice you have your “fear thought”, take a DEEP BREATH and intentionally replace it by saying your calming thought.

In the beginning you might find yourself doing this a few times a day – or even dozens of times. The more you practice though, the better you’ll feel.

NOTE: You will notice an improvement in your thoughts the first day!
Practice for one day and come back and share your comments below.

1 Minute Self-Hypnosis Instructions

1 Minute Self-Hypnosis Instructions

Self-hypnosis is one of the most effective and easy ways to help yourself. Even better – it’s free!

Self-hypnosis is a personal self-help technique that is proven to be effective when used to:

  • Get rid of old habits
  • Increase your confidence
  • Reduce your stress
  • Manage pain
  • Increase your creativity
The more you use self-hypnosis, the more you are reinforcing what you want.

Benefits of Self-hypnosis

  • It’s simple to learn
  • You can do it anytime (except when driving or operating machinery)
  • You’ll feel good every time you do it.
  • It takes about 1 minute

Self-hypnosis is an effective technique to help you achieve a goal. Essentially, you’ll be stating your goal in a positive statement, and will be repeating it ten times while in self-hypnosis. This repetition will help you to “program your subconscious mind” to motivate yourself and achieve your goal easily.

Creating Your Positive Statement

Generally when people want to change a habit or feel better, they tend to think first about what they DON’T want to do.

For example, if you want to lose weight, you might say to himself “I don’t want to eat cookies.”

Unfortunately, your subconscious mind doesn’t understand the word “don’t”.

When your subconscious mind hears “I don’t want to eat cookies.”,  it interprets it as “I want to eat cookies.”So, if your goal is to change your eating habits, then it’s important to create a personal statement indicating what you want.
For example, you might say: “I choose to eat fruit for dessert and I feel great.”
Before you begin self-hypnosis, take a few minutes and thing about something you want. For example you might want to:
  • Find your perfect partner
  • Get a better job
  • Lose weight
  • Exercise more
  • Get over your fears about speaking in public

While you are in self-hypnosis you’ll be imagining yourself in your future as if you have already reached your goal.

It may seem simple, but creating a personal statement properly can get pretty complex.
So, rather than worrying about the what to say while you are in self-hypnosis, here’s a great sentence to use. It will work beautifully with every goal you have:

“I like the idea that every day in every way I’m getting better and better.”

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SELF-HYPNOSIS

  1. Find a comfortable place to sit, turn off your phone, and close your eyes.
  2. Take your first deep breath and on your exhale, relax your jaw.
  3. Take your second deep breath and on your exhale, relax and drop your shoulders.
  4. On your third deep breath, while you exhale, relax the muscles in your stomach.
  5. Continue to breath gently and deeply.
  6. Slowly count backward 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…
        Using Your Imagination in self-hypnosis
  • Now imagine a wide screen TV in your mind.
  • On the screen, place an image of yourself in the future. This new future you has achieved your goals.
  • See yourself looking wonderful and feeling great.
  • Now imagine that this image of you has magically increased and is now life size.
  • Imagine yourself stepping inside your future body.
  • Imagine what it feels like to be inside your future body.
  • Feel how great you feel. Notice how happy you are because you have achieved your goals.
  • Spend a few moments in your future body feeling wonderful.
  • While in your future body, repeat the sentence ten times:

“I like the idea that every day in every way I’m getting better and better.”

  • After you have finished saying your sentences, spend a few more moments enjoying your self-hypnosis. Then open your eyes and come back into the room.

A FEW QUICK NOTES

The first time you use self-hypnosis you will notice how good you feel afterwards. When you use self-hypnosis first thing in the morning you set yourself up for a great day. Take one minute each day for one week and notice how you feel. Then incorporate it into your life just as you brush your teeth daily.

Feel free to copy and use these instructions in any way you choose. I ask that you include my name and site. The 1 Minute Self-Hypnosis Instructions curtesy of Wendy Merron. http://www.WendyMerron.com

Note: When you use self-hypnosis at night you will find that you will sleep soundly and wake up refreshed. While you are sleeping, your subconscious mind will focus on the positive thoughts that you are actively reprogramming in your mind.

OMG I’m Gonna Die.

Dec 11, 2011 by

OMG I’m Gonna Die.

This morning I opened up an email from one of the internet’s most popular medical newsletters.
This famous physician is extremely knowledgeable and influential. He was one of the people who brought EFT, the Emotional Freedom Technique into the mainstream due to his wide readership.

I opened his newsletter because his headline made me feel nervous and I realized that I had to read it.
The headline read:

If You Go To Church, Heed This Warning

Here’s the weird part about my response. I DON’T GO TO CHURCH.

Take a look at a sampling of a few of his recent scary headlines. The corresponding text in his newsletters can be pretty frightening too.

This Supermarket “Health Food” Killed These Baby Rats in Three Weeks
Worse than Bad Advice – This Can Lead to Seizures, Paralysis, Blindness, and Death
The Cancer Time Bomb Sitting in Your Refrigerator – Will You Stop Consuming It?

So why did I feel compelled to go further and open his mail? It certainly wasn’t because I was curious.

It was sheer fear. A worry, panic, stress response. I HAD to read it.

During breakfast, Michael and I were talking about this newsletter. He hates
these newsletters because he feels that the facts are sensationalized for the sole purpose of getting attention and making sales.

He chooses not to welcome this newsletter and it’s negative energy into his inbox. He doesn’t want to react in fear.

While sipping my coffee (probably laden with carcinogins) I started to worry about my recent flu shot and if the Pringles I ate last year were going to kill me. At that moment it occurred to me that I always feel worried about my health after I read his newsletters.

The oldest media trick in the book is to use headlines to create panic and stress and watch the sales go up, Up, and UP!

Look up now at the subject line for this newsletter.

It’s ironic that no matter who we are, and how calm and relaxed we live our life, it’s human nature to respond to these headlines.

You can let your responses eat you up with worry and stress, or you can intentionally choose new thoughts and feel better.

My upcoming book, Powerful Thinking on Purpose, shows you how easy it is to choose your thoughts wisely, reduce your stress, and feel better.
I love the title, and I’m waiting for a blast of inspiration for a great sub-title.

Any ideas?

If You Don’t Ask, The Starship Enterprise Will Pass You By

If You Don’t Ask, The Starship Enterprise Will Pass You By

I used to avoid going places. When I was younger and single, I was usually nervous and fearful and avoided going to singles events by myself. If I went, I made sure that I always had a girlfriend with me.

There were many activities that I missed because of my fears. Every once in a while though I would go someplace by myself and have a blast. For example I went white water rafting with 20 other singles and enjoyed myself immensely.

But even though I had an exhilarating day, my old worries soon popped up again and prevented me from going to the next activity.

I missed out on a lot of activities back then.

Years ago the local paper had an ad for the upcoming Annual Star Trek Convention in Cherry Hill, NJ. I had always enjoyed The Next Generation and Voyager – I loved that the Enterprise finally had a female Captain! – and kept thinking about how much fun it would be to attend the Convention.

I didn’t want to go alone because I thought it wouldn’t be much fun by myself. I asked my children. They said no. (They were teens at the time and didn’t want to be seen with their mother.)

The thought crossed my mind that I could invite a friend, but was quickly rejected. I was concerned that my friend would think I was a nerd and closet Trekkie.

So I decided not to ask and not to attend the Convention.

A few weeks later I mentioned the Star Trek Convention in passing to one of my friends.

To my surprise this very conservative friend replied“Oh! I wish I had known. I’ve always wanted to go to a Star Trek Convention!”

Was I ever shocked. I could have asked her and she would have come with me. Shock, surprise, and a bit of sadness flashed through me.

In that brief moment I made the decision that I will no longer avoid doing something because of my inner judgements, fears, and worries. Going by myself needed to be OK.

I learned that my friends think I’m a bit odd and they like me anyway.

I learned not to make assumptions.

I learned that people like to be invited – not matter what the occasion.

Every week I now invite people. I invite people to read my blogs. I invite people to my workshops. I invite people to learn about their thoughts and how to change them.

Last week I invited two women to join me at the Historical Society of PA to taste food and learn about a newly published civil war cookbook.

My life is so much more satisfying now that I no longer worry about what others may think of me.

The Great Law of Attraction Hoax

Nov 9, 2011 by

The Great Law of Attraction Hoax

Last week at the end of his first session, my client asked me this question:

“What do you think about the concept of the Law of Attraction?”

Never one to miss an opportunity to answer a question with my own, I asked

“What do YOU think about The Law of Attraction?”

“Well, he said “I don’t know if I really believe it. Come on, how can you just think about something and then have it happen? I thought about a new SUV yesterday and when I woke up, it wasn’t sitting in my driveway.”

For a moment I wondered what he really wanted to know. Did he truly want my opinion? Usually my clients ask me questions because they want to find out if we are in agreement.

I asked him if he wanted the long or the short answer. He said he had a few minutes before he had to get back to work, but was curious about my take on the subject.

“The long answer is that if the Law of Attraction is about only wishing for what you want, then I think it’s a big hoax. You thought about the car, and if wishing was all that you needed, then you would have seen the car in your driveway, wouldn’t you?

I do know that when you change your thoughts and focus on what you want, things begin to change. Your attitude will change. Your behavior will change. You will notice more opportunities and more possibilities. Your actions will change.

As a result, you move in the direction of what you want in your life.”

The short answer is, that when you change your thoughts, then anything is possible.”

As he stood up and put his jacket on he smiled and said,

“I like the idea that I can change my thoughts and affect my life.”

If someone tells you that all you need to do is to wish and you’ll attract what you want, then turn the other way. The truth is that only when you take responsibility for your thoughts and learn to shift your focus, your life will change.

Because when your thoughts change, your beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and ultimately your actions will change.

You can wish all you want, but if there is no action, well, you’ll just be stuck in wishing mode.

A powerful way to change your thoughts is to learn EFT, the Emotional Freedom Technique. On Nov. 12  learn how to use EFT for reducing pain, releasing negative thoughts, and reducing stress and anxiety. Watch this fascinating video now. Click HERE
